Martha Hurst

(She/her)

Lynn Hanson Studio

Cold Wax and Oil, Acrylic and Watercolor

Artist Statement

"Rooted in the landscape and atmosphere of the Pacific Northwest, Martha Hurst creates paintings that blur the line between observation and imagination. Working in oil, acrylic, cold wax and oil, watercolor, and collage, she builds layered two-dimensional works rich in texture, atmosphere, and quiet complexity.

Her imagery moves between imagined interiors and abstracted landscapes, where living organisms—both real and invented—emerge and dissolve. These forms echo the rhythms of nature while inviting personal interpretation, creating spaces that feel at once familiar and otherworldly.

Martha earned a minor in art from the University of Texas at Arlington and continues to deepen her practice through workshops with internationally recognized artists. She is currently studying with Liana Bennett and John Avendaño, refining her intuitive approach and expressive mark-making.

In a time shaped by rapid advances in photography and artificial intelligence, Martha turns intentionally inward. Her paintings arise from memory, imagination, and observation—images born from within yet grounded in the natural world. Many of her works evoke calm, ease, and quiet joy, while others carry an undercurrent of energy and mystery.

Martha maintains a studio at the Graphite Art Center in Edmonds, Washington."
