Artist Statement
"Kate creates her art with humor and expression to depict some of her favorite wildlife and raise funds for their conservation. She has found so much joy in so many methods of expression that she's chosen not to confine herself to one medium-- working mainly in acrylic and digital painting but often dabbles in printmaking, pen and ink, and silk dyeing. Regardless of medium, one of the consistencies that has held true through all of her pieces, however, is her love of lighthearted expressionism— typically readable, relatable, or ridiculous expressions on animals.
Animals have always been a fascination of Kate's, so they are most often the subjects of her artwork. Kate likes to explore how we see our own human experience in our wild neighbors and themselves in us. She figures, if we can learn to empathize with and see the humanity in an exasperated looking mother bird with her three screaming chicks, or a determined raccoon reaching for grapes he’ll never quite reach, then maybe we can learn to see the humanity in each other.
Kate has participated with the Studio Tour since its inception in 2005 and has served on the Studio Tour Steering Committee as the Webmaster and Application Coordinator since 2022."
